First Line Management for Support Staff

This course will offer an opportunity to explore coaching and mentoring skills associated with first line management.

Course Objectives

  • An opportunity to explore the characteristics of coaching and mentoring and how they can be used to foster a culture of continual improvement within a team or individual
  • Time to consider models of coaching that provide a framework to support active listening skills, thought-provoking questions, critical reflection and a solutions-focused approach
  • A review of tools and techniques to support effective communication, including approaches to difficult conversations, assertiveness and challenge
  • An environment in which to practise coaching conversations using appropriate tools and techniques
  • A further opportunity to refine the development of coaching skills, reflect on the personal journey and suggest ways in which these can be used within individual roles, teams and the organisation
  • A focus on the essential skills of self-reflection and time to identify individual strengths and gaps and how to plan a learning journey through coaching


The outcomes are designed to support the development of staff in each of the sectors as they are focused on exploring the characteristics of effective coaching (and mentoring) and the skills associated with enabling colleagues and team members to realise and fulfil potential.

Brief biography

As Professional Development Manager, Jane’s experience of working within the Further Ed-ucation sector includes teaching in the English Department at Shrewsbury College, develop-ing provision as Programme Leader for Education, focusing on staff development and train-ing as an Advanced Practitioner, and working in partnership with colleagues at Edge Hill Uni-versity as the Course Leader for initial teacher education.

Investment by the College in promoting a coaching culture was reflected in Jane’s appoint-ment as an Advanced Learning Coach, a role which provided opportunities to embark on re-search projects, lead conference workshops and contribute to published work. The success-ful introduction of curriculum-based Professional Learning Communities at Shrewsbury Col-lege and development of a team of Learning Coaches to support professional development has facilitated the implementation of Peer Review and Lesson Study processes, both of which draw on the principles of coaching and mentoring to inform professional dialogue.
